Marine Tap defeats Lakeshore/Antonio’s 6-0 (1st round playoffs)

In a “steady” game at L.C. Walker arena on Tuesday, Marine Tap skated to a 6-0 win over Lakeshore/Antonio’s (The black team).  The first period was a battle resulting in Jim MacDonald opening the scoring late in the first period with what proved to be the game winner.  The game ensued with steady tallies from Steve Vaughan, Jim MacDonald, Brent Finner, Steve Vaughan, and Steve Bethune.  MTR currently is looking strong for the next round.  If the team can lay off the buffets for a couple of weeks, we should do well!

3/4/2003        Marine Tap vs. Howell’s/Racquets

Marine Tap defeats Howell’s/Racquets 7-4

In an “eventful” game at L.C. Walker arena on Tuesday, Marine Tap skated to a 7-4 win over Howell’s/Racquets.  The first period was a bevy of bounces in MTR’s favor resulting in 5 unanswered goals.  Brent Finner opened with a charging shot goal.  Rich St.Denis capitalized on a rebound to go up 2-0.  Larry Finner cleaned up the skirmish in front of the net with a brilliant wrist shot.  Steve Bethune brought the score to 4-0.  Brent Finner got back into the action with another tally to end the first period with what proved to be the game winner.  At this point MTR went to sleep and did not wake up until the third period when the score was 5-4!  Rich St.Denis skated past Dave D’Alcorn with a nifty move to the backhand, then to the top of the net to go up 6-4.  Brent Finner completed his hat trick with the final goal in the 7-4 victory.

2/25/2003      Marine Tap vs. Lakeshore/Antonio’s

Marine Tap defeats Time Out Lounge 5-4

In a “sloppy – win ugly” game at L.C. Walker arena on Tuesday, Marine Tap skated to a 5-4 win over Time Out.  Storming to the net, Brent Finner opened the scoring for MTR.  Time Out came back with a “goalie gift giveaway” goal shortly after.  At times it looked as though normally solid goalie Mark Evans had borrowed a new spring loaded glove.   Mark Cybulski, using his “spin around” acrobatics notched an on ice shot through heavy traffic to regain the lead.  Rich St. Denis then banged it in from up close to put MTR up 3-1.  At this point MTR proceeded roll over while Time Out countered with 3 unanswered goals to for the go ahead lead 4-3.  With about 6 minutes left in the game, Steve Haines, in front of the net, one-timed a pass from Steve Vaughn to tie up the game.  In the same shift Steve Haines attempted a pass to Steve Vaughan from behind the net only to have it hit the stick of goalie Tim Corinte and go into the net.

Win ugly was the theme for the game.  There was talk of a new line shift method for the next game to accommodate the eleventh skater - we may need to bring in Scottie Bowman for the playoffs!

2/11/2003      Marine Tap vs. Lakeshore/Antonio’s

Marine Tap ties Lakeshore/Antonio’s 3-3

In a “stand around” game at L.C. Walker arena on Tuesday, Marine Tap skated to a 3-3 tie with LA.  MTR gave up the first goal midway in the 1st period.  Jim MacDonald from MTR answered with a goal resulting from a great move across the front of goalie Todd Wheeler.  Late in the 2nd period LA took the lead 2-1.  In the 3rd, Steve Haines scored from the slot on a rebound.  LA then answered with a backbreaking goal late in the 3rd to take the lead 3-2.  Jim MacDonald came through again with the tying goal in a fast break up the middle.

Not MTR’s best effort but good to at least get the tie.

02/04/2003     Marine Tap vs. Main Street

Marine Tap defeats Main Street 4-1

In a gritty game at L.C. Walker arena on Tuesday, Marine Tap dominated Main Street.  MTR was off to a slow start but finally began to show some life when Rich St.Denis started off by banging in a rebound.  Steve Vaughan continued with a pass from Jim MacDonald to light up Main Street.  Jeff VanStratt tallied on number 3 with a wrist shot that handcuffed goalie Mike Allsbrook.  Jim MacDonald finished the evening with a shot from the point that squeezed under the goalie.  It looked like, with 3 minutes left in the game, that goalie Mark Evans would have a shutout.  With 2:30 left, Main Street countered with their only goal of the evening.

01/28/2003     Marine Tap vs. Tan ‘n’ Tone

Tan ‘n’ Tone defeats Marine Tap 3-0

In a lack-luster game at L.C. Walker arena on Tuesday, Tan ‘n’ Tone quietly put away Marine Tap.  Tan ‘n’ Tone opened with a pair of goals on one shift in the 1st period.  As MTR had many “almosts”, the passes just did not connect throughout the game.

01/21/2003     Marine Tap vs. Westside Inn

Westside defeats Marine Tap 4-3

In a hard fought battle at L.C. Walker arena on Tuesday, Tony Federighe and the Westside supporting players defeated Marine Tap.  Steve Haines opened the scoring with a scramble in front of the net that was ultimately knocked in by Tim Schuppe from Westside.  Tony Federighe answered quickly with a goal about 1 minute later.  Brent Finner unleashed a shot from the point that was tipped in by Steve Haines for a 2-1 lead.  Again, Tony came back with another tally.  In the 3rd period, Brent Finner charged to the net to score what looked like the game winner.  With about 2:30 left in the game, Tony tied the game.  About 40 seconds later, Tony delivered the game winner for Westside – the result of a Marine Tap defensive breakdown.

At this point, Westside appears to be on their way to win the season.  MTR has a solid lock on second place.
